Take a Dip: Best Local Swimming Spots

Headwaters is nestled amongst the rolling landscape of the Texas Hill Country, an area known for its dramatic topography, breathtaking views and some of the best swimming holes in the state. Spending a Saturday afternoon hiking out to your favorite spot and relaxing with friends in the cool waters is part of the lifestyle. And with summer weather in the Austin area extending far beyond August, you have even more time to get a taste of this refreshing way of life with this list of the top summer spots, all located within an easy drive of Headwaters.

  1. Hamilton Pool

Maybe one of Dripping Springs’ most iconic spots, Hamilton Pool was formed by a waterfall flowing over outcroppings to create a stunning 50-foot waterfall. While the waterfall will sometimes slow to a trickle, the water level is consistent throughout the year, so no need to worry about it drying up. It’s an extremely popular spot and reservations are required some months, so be sure to call ahead.

  1. Barton Creek Greenbelt

With multiple access points and an abundance of swimming holes, Barton Creek Greenbelt is a local staple. You’ll likely need to hike for a short while to get to any of the watering holes, but it’s well worth it for the cool waters and gorgeous natural surroundings. During dry summer months, some watering holes can dry up, so be sure to check on water levels here before you head out.

  1. Jacob’s Well

Made up of the largest fully submerged cave in Texas, Jacob’s Well is a spring-fed pool that’s about 140-feet deep. Surrounded by a nature park, you can take advantage of other amenities and activities like hiking, picnic areas, a labyrinth and even morning tours. They require reservations to swim and spots fill up quickly, so make sure to plan ahead.

As a bonus, during the summer months they offer Splash Party movie nights, which has become a summer tradition for many.
